The Tutankhamun Galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum Lit by PROLIGHTS

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), officially inaugurated on 1 November 2025 on the Giza plateau, is the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation. It houses a collection of over 100,000 artefacts, with nearly 50,000 on display, just a short distance from the pyramids. Among its highlights are the Tutankhamun Galleries, where over 5,000 artefacts from the boy king's tomb are brought together within an immersive curatorial narrative exploring his life, death and legacy.

In this context, a key role is played by a 160-metre-long mesh display within the Tutankhamun Galleries, alongside which 51 PROLIGHTS EclGalleryProfile 19-36° DMX 35 W units have been installed. The fixtures are distributed across two main zones (BAND A and BAND B), dedicated to the large graphic panels that introduce and connect the exhibition's thematic sections. Here, the Gallery Eclipse luminaires provide uniform, glare-free illumination of the vertical surfaces, ensuring that texts, images and colours remain clearly legible while preserving the delicate atmosphere of the space.

The same fixtures are also used at the entrance and exit of the gallery to create striking “virtual pyramids” using carefully shaped beams. By exploiting the zoom range and precise shuttering capabilities, the lighting team was able to define clean geometric forms that echo the museum's architecture and its views towards the Giza pyramids, adding a strong scenographic element without introducing additional structures into the space.

The original lighting concept was developed by Bartenbach GmbH, with value engineering, light packaging management and on-site supervision by Piero Peggi Grassia (VanCram sl), lighting programming by Carlos Torres and technical implementation by Joaquín Dominguez for contractor Acciona Cultura on behalf of client Besix Orascom.

Commenting on the project, Piero Peggi Grassia said: “This was the first time we had worked with PROLIGHTS products. We chose them to replace the fixtures in the original design, which were significantly more expensive and offered lower quality. After using them on this project, we decided to adopt PROLIGHTS solutions in many of our other works as well.

With this installation, PROLIGHTS further strengthens its presence at the Grand Egyptian Museum. After contributing to the illumination of the iconic external façade, PROLIGHTS products now demonstrate the same efficiency, control and visual quality in large-scale gallery projects, supporting curators and lighting designers in creating immersive and sustainable visitor experiences.
