The election of the German Wine Majesties, the official representatives of German wine culture who tour wineries, wine festivals and trade events across the country throughout the season, is one of the most anticipated events in the German wine calendar. Traditionally hosted at the Saalbau in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, it has been produced for many years as a high-quality evening TV show, broadcast live by SWR. 

For this edition, SWR lighting master Marco Ongaro, who has looked after and developed the show for more than a decade, faced the challenge of adapting the lighting concept to a new, modern and cleaner set design, together with the team at Cassiopeia Veranstaltungstechnik GmbH, the technical service provider. As Ralf Oppelt of Cassiopeia explained, the design also had to be "prime-time ready and leave a certain Golden Globe glamour look" with viewers. Alongside Ongaro, Cassiopeia handled the camera lighting, the lighting design and the music-related video and lighting effects, working in close coordination with the video, sound and game technology departments. 

At the heart of the visual concept were 28 PROLIGHTS HaluPix Duo dual-layer LED panels, supplied by Lightpower, PROLIGHTS' distributor in Germany and Austria. Stacked into slim vertical columns integrated into the set on both sides of the stage entrances, they were used primarily to stage the appearances of the Wine Majesties. Within a compact 50x50 cm panel, HaluPix Duo pairs powerful warm-white beams with an RGB+WW pixel surface, bridging lighting and video in a single versatile fixture.

"Thanks to their narrow beam, we were able to create massive effects with depth using the HaluPix Duo, which, despite their power, still read well on camera," said Ralf Oppelt.

During the show, each layer had a distinct role. The beam LEDs drove dynamic effects, especially during the musical performances. The pixel surface carried video-based content tailored to each song, game or graphic element of the show. That ability to display content allowed the panels to blend into the set design and serve as decorative scenic elements. The two layers were controlled separately, the beams from the lighting console and the pixel surface from the media server. This proved a key advantage, particularly for keeping the panels in step with the video walls and the content direction.

HaluPix Duo proved to be the right choice for adapting the show to its new look, meeting the demands of a production in which modern lighting systems, intelligent control and media integration merged into a coherent overall result. This TV application confirmed its strength as an innovative creative tool for high-profile live and broadcast productions.
